Gary Bernhardy was born in 1943 in Lyndon, Ill., in and grew up in Morrison, Ill. He graduated from high school in 1961 where he played freshman and sophomore football and was a trombone player in the marching band and the concert orchestra. He received a B.S. degree from Calvin College and a B.S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and was a member of the So-ciety of Automotive engineers. He received an M.B.A. degree in finance and economics from New York University. His first job was with the family owned business, Bernhardy Motors, where he be-came the rotary power mower expert in town at the age of 15. He began his business career with Medema Van Kooten Associates, land surveyors. He went on to work with a number of companies including Esso Research and Engineering, Mobil Oil, Atlantic Richfield and American Can. In 1983 he became self-employed working with startup and turnaround companies. He is a Certified Turnaround Professional and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor He and his wife Linda live in Darien and are members of the Middlesex Swim Club. He enjoys auto racing, working on older sports cars, traveling and watching football.
