Gene Gildea was born in Brooklyn in 1943, grew up there and graduated from St. John’s Preparatory in 1960, where he was active in indoor and outdoor track and cross country. He graduated from St. John’s University in 1965 with a B.A. in economics. At St. John’s, he was active in the glee club and the Hibernian Society. Upon graduation, Gene joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and began work in purchasing with Shell Oil Co. in New York. He spent the next 40 years working in the financial world for companies such as Shearson Lehman, American Express, Travelers and, finally, Citigroup, retiring eight years ago. Gene and his wife Joan have lived in Darien for 36 years. They have a son living in Jersey City and a daughter living in Manhattan. Gene belongs to the Middlesex Club and the UNCW Seahawks Club. His interests include tennis, golf and travel, and he is a sports fan, rooting for all Blue Wave events.
